Star Wars Galaxies to end this year
Star Wars Galaxies, the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game, will come to an end this year. The creator of the game, Sony announced via email that the game will be closed on 15th December. The decision was made because Sony's contract with the Star Wars franchise runs out in 2012.
Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) launched in 2003 allowed users to play as any one of 10 species, and could train as a Jedi or fly spaceships against each other in a vast online environment. Around one million copies of the game were sold in the very first month of its release though it has been losing numbers in recent times. The updates made the game less complex, which left the game buffs unsatisfied. John Smedley, the head of Sony Online Entertainment said that the last three months of gaming will be free for users. Star Wars enthusiasts can now wait for the launch of The Old Republic, a new MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe, which will be released by Electronic Arts' subsidiary BioWare in the second half of 2011.
